Your Guide to the NDIS
Everything you need to know about the National Disability Insurance Scheme - from eligibility to getting the most from your plan.
What is the NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government initiative that provides funding to people with a permanent and significant disability. It helps participants access the supports they need to live an ordinary life.
The NDIS is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and covers supports across daily living, community participation, employment, health, and wellbeing.
Who is Eligible?
To access the NDIS, you generally need to meet these criteria:
- Age: Under 65 years old when you first apply
- Residency: Australian citizen, permanent resident, or hold a Protected Special Category Visa
- Disability: Have a permanent disability that significantly affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
- Early intervention: Or have a condition likely to benefit from early intervention to reduce future support needs
Not sure if you qualify? The NDIA can help assess your eligibility. Call 1800 800 110.
How to Apply
1. Gather Evidence
Collect reports from your GP, specialists, therapists, or other healthcare providers. These should describe your disability, how it affects your daily life, and what supports you need.
2. Submit an Access Request
Complete the NDIS Access Request Form (ARF). You can download it from ndis.gov.au, call 1800 800 110, or visit your nearest NDIA office. A Local Area Coordinator (LAC) can help you with this.
3. Wait for a Decision
The NDIA will assess your application. This usually takes around 21 days. They may ask for more information during this time.
4. Planning Meeting
Once approved, you'll meet with an NDIA planner or LAC to discuss your goals and what supports you need. This meeting determines your funding.
5. Receive Your Plan
Your NDIS plan will outline your funding and the types of supports covered. You can then start choosing your providers.
Understanding Your NDIS Plan
Your NDIS plan includes different funding categories:
Core Supports
Funding for daily activities, transport, consumables, and assistance with social and community participation.
Capacity Building
Supports that help you build skills and independence - like training, therapy, plan management, and employment support.
Capital Supports
Funding for assistive technology, equipment, and home or vehicle modifications.
How Plan Management Works
You can manage your NDIS funding in three ways:
- NDIA-managed: The NDIA pays your providers directly. You can only use registered providers.
- Plan-managed: A plan manager handles your invoices and payments. You can use both registered and unregistered providers.
- Self-managed: You manage your own budget, pay providers yourself, and claim reimbursement. Maximum choice and flexibility.
Choosing Your Providers
One of the best things about the NDIS is choice and control. You choose who provides your supports. Here's what to look for:
- Are they a registered NDIS provider?
- Do they have experience with your type of disability?
- Can they match you with compatible support workers?
- Are they flexible with scheduling?
- Do they take a person-centred approach?
